Data on hospitalizations related to cannabis are based on the Canadian health administrative databases and were analyzed using an interrupted time series design with 3 observation periods: prelegalization, the period of legalization with product and store restrictions (October to February 2020), and the COVID-19 pandemic (March to March 2023).

Age- and sex-standardized rates of hospitalizations for cannabis-related reasons were compared across the 3 observation periods. The results show that cannabis-related hospitalizations decreased during the first year of legalization and then increased in the subsequent years. The rate of hospitalizations for cannabis-related reasons differed by province, which likely reflects both health system differences and documentation of cannabis-related harms. In addition, the underlying code for cannabis-related hospitalizations is inconsistently applied between provinces, which may introduce bias into within-province comparisons.
