Recovering From Sexual Addiction

Spread the love

Trying to stop Porn recovery program addictive behaviours alone without addressing the underlying causes is often unsuccessful. Addicts can only withstand the mental obsession and physical temptations for long periods of time by using enormous amounts of willpower. The moment that willpower runs out, the urges return and addictive behaviour resumes.

The underlying cause of sexual addiction is usually trauma from childhood, relationship issues and/or past experiences of abuse. These traumas are often unresolved and leave the body in a state of heightened stress. Trauma-focused therapy helps you resolve these traumatic memories, regulate emotions and develop healthier coping strategies. Two specific techniques used for this are Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) and Somatic Experiencing.

In addition to these psychosocial treatments, there are also medications that can help with sexual addiction. These medications are prescribed by a psychiatrist and are designed to reduce cravings and improve mood and concentration. These medications are used in combination with psychotherapy, but they can be very effective for some people.

The Science Behind Emotional Healing

To address a sexual addiction, you need to identify the personal rituals that lead to sexual acting out behaviour and interrupt those rituals with more positive activities. This can include joining a support group like Sex Addicts Anonymous, getting a recovery sponsor or accountability partner, seeking therapy and/or entering treatment at an inpatient or outpatient facility. Adding new healthy habits that can replace the old ones may also be helpful, such as exercise, meditation or a hobby. Adding Internet filters to limit access to sexual content is also important.
