Can caster affect handling?
They are designed for use in automotive plants, freight terminals and industrial applications. They come in a variety of materials, from steel to rubber. A swivel casters heavy duty can handle up to 1,200 pounds.
The kingpin in a swivel caster holds ball bearings in place, allowing the wheel to roll in any direction. Double race ball bearings provide quiet mobility and smooth swiveling.
Wheels can be made of various materials, including polyurethane, soft rubber and thermoplastic elastomers. The type of material used can determine the level of floor protection. Polyurethane casters are ideal for floors with debris, while softer rubber wheels work well on concrete.
Some casters are available in brake models, which will lock when the caster isn’t in use. These are particularly useful in situations where the wheel cannot rotate. Brakes may also be needed to secure the caster to equipment or other structures.
The swivel head of a swivel caster is attached to a frame, known as a caster yoke. A washer between the hub end of the wheel and caster legs holds the bearings in place.
Rigid casters are similar to swivel casters, but they do not have a kingpin. They are fixed to a plate, which is typically welded or riveted. However, rigid casters tend to be stronger than swivel casters.
